The Whitacre Engineering Company, Canton, OH discovered these photos of the Whitacre Greer Company's Waynesburg plant and was kind enough to share them with us.  Click on the photograph for a higher resolution image.  Throughout its history the Whitacre Greer Company and its predecessors have manufactured a wide range of fired-clay products including hollow tile as pictured below.  J.J. Whitacre founded both The Whitacre Engineering Company and the Whitacre Greer Company.

I'm from the Whitacre family. My Dad was Corwin C. Whitacre, Jr. His father left the Canton area and went out on his own. He ended up making concrete blocks in Chicago Heights, Illinois. After his death my Dad and uncle Elson Whitacre were in charge. When plastic came into the world, my Dad stared a plastic company. Before he was through he and his partner started making the small plasic cream containers that are seen in most restaurants. Just as they were getting started, his partner died (and my Mother the same week). The business was sold and my Dad spent the rest of his life playing golf in Sun City, Arizona. I have visited Canton several times (went to Denison in Granville, Ohio) but except for Joan Whitacre...long deceased...I really didn't know the Whitacres in Canton. I ran across your information and just wanted to say "hello". Sincerely.............Katherine Whitacre Cole
