Whitacre Greer Recognized by The Brick Industry Association for Excellence in Environmental Stewardship

Outstanding programs in environmental stewardship, and employee health and safety were honored recently by the Brick Industry Association at its annual meeting in Marco Island, Florida.

Whitacre Greer was one of three manufacturers recognized for exellence in environmental stewardship with its waste reduction program focusing on efforts to Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.

Reduce.  In 2008 Whitacre Greer completed a lighting project replacing lighting throughout the facility with low power consumption T5 and T8 fluorescent lighting.  Additionally, lighting throughout the warehouse was placed on motion sensors allowing for reduced lighting when the area is not manned.

Reuse.  Whitacre Greer developed a new paver that will help developers and municipalities comply with the requirements of EPA Phase II Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems by allowing storm water runoff to pass between the pavers and into base and subbase material rather than into drains, ditches or settling ponds.  A new color, composed of scrap material collected from the manufacturing process is being produced in this permeable paver.  This paver meets some specifications as a 100% recycled product.

Recycle.  In 2008 Whitacre Greer began a recycling program for cardboard and plastic.  The acceptance of this program by employees made the program a success.
